New focus and format

COLOGNE FINE ART & ANTIQUES 19 to 23 November 2008

Trade fair organizers Koelnmesse and representatives drawn from the trade associations supporting Cologne’s traditional fine art and antiques fair have finalized a new strategy designed to give the event a new specialist focus and format. Categories of exhibit will be reorganized to clearly define the Fair’s image and eliminate any overlap with ART COLOGNE. Greater emphasis will be placed on fine art, antiques and applied art. Contemporary art and photography will not be offered at future events but will be showcased exclusively by ART COLOGNE.

The Fair will be rebranded COLOGNE FINE ART & ANTIQUES. The new name – and new logo – underscore the new focus and format. ‘We’ve made it our objective to design the Fair’s portfolio with the interests and commitments of the exhibitors in mind,’ explained Koelnmesse Executive Vice President Oliver P. Kuhrt. ‘We’ve achieved this by restructuring the Fair to avoid overlap, by clearly delineating the range of exhibits and by shifting the Fair dates to a later slot.’ Hans-Martin Schmitz, Rheinischer Kunsthändlerverband (RKV) said: ‘With a bigger concentration on fine art and antiques and the prospect of a much more sharply focussed event, the Fair is sure to draw exhibitors and match the profitability levels of the old Westdeutsche Kunstmesse. Cologne has an excellent track record as a fine-art marketplace.’

COLOGNE FINE ART & ANTIQUES is scheduled for 19 to 23 November 2008.

The range of goods at COLOGNE FINE ART & ANTIQUES will be clearly distinguishable from that of ART COLOGNE. The palette of exhibits will span classical antiquity to the twentieth century, with a focus on fine art and applied art. Antiquities, fine furniture and antiques, Old Masters, nineteenth-century painting and classical twentieth-century art will be highlighted. Other key categories will be Jugendstil, art deco, tribal art and Asian art. Rare antiquarian books and prints, autograph letters and manuscripts will also feature strongly. A dateline of 1980 will be introduced in the classical modern section and contemporary art and photography will not be admitted. To enhance quality, art in limited editions will be subject to more stringent admission criteria. Edition size may not exceed 300 and multiples will not be admitted. ‘We’ve got a coherent overall strategy that gives the Fair a clear-cut identity,’said Klaus Gerrit Friese, Bundesverband deutscher Galerien und Editionen (BVDG).‘We’ve all put a lot of effort into a strategy that puts us right on track for a successful autumn run of COLOGNE FINE ART & ANTIQUES.’ Norbert Munsch, Verband Deutscher Antiquare (VDA) welcomed the changes on behalf of his colleagues in the Association, saying: ‘We’re giving Cologne our full backing. We’re delighted to be able to play an active role in the development of the project under its new name COLOGNE FINE ART & ANTIQUES.’ Dr. Hermann Specht, Bundesverband des Deutschen Kunst- und Antiquitätenhandels (BDKA) also signalled his approval and expressed his optimism about the Fair: ‘A great start for a promising venue.’

The recent decisions leave plenty of scope for expansion and additional finishing touches. Architecture, design and layout of COLOGNE FINE ART & ANTIQUES will be streamlined. The Fair’s layout will be consolidated and it will be staged on one level of the exhibition hall. Outside experts are to be called in to advise on interior design in keeping with a fine-art event of this calibre.

COLOGNE FINE ART & ANTIQUES will be staged annually.

Venue: Hall 4.2, Cologne Trade Fair Centre (Koelnmesse)
Fair dates: 19 to 23 November 2008
